Tethering a Sony A7rII (or any new Sony camera) using Capture One

I was looking for a way to tether my camera to a laptop but also have the photos show up on an iPad so that I could see them as I shot (to confirm focus and/or expression on a larger screen) or to let another person at the shoot view the photos. If you use the Sony Remote control app you can kind of tether using that app and Lightroom. You basically set up Lightroom with a hot folder in which Sony’s Remote control app send the files. It is a little slow but works fine but you can’t get a wireless connection to a tablet while doing this. You can set up tethering (using the hot folder) and then send out a HDMI signal to a projector or TV. (Sounds complicated doesn’t it :))

In researching I found that Capture One provides real live tethering instead of a patchwork and is very quick. It also allows for support of a wireless device to be sent copies of the files which can be reviewed and magnified remotely. Now if you had to buy the normal Capture One app this could get very expensive but Sony has teamed up with Phase One to provide Capture One at a very reasonable expense.

The lite version is free here:

Or, you can download a trial version of the full program here:

Free software for iPad viewing while shooting tethered:

If you are a Sony shooter Phase One offers a Pro version that is Sony only for $50 instead of the normal $299 price.
